How to Fix a Separating or Tilting Chimney | HomePro | Frontier Basement Systems

In this episode of HomePro, Judy and Layne Gebers explain why chimneys tend to tilt and separate from the house and how to fix this common problem.

Chimneys are massive masonry structures that, especially in newer homes, are built after the home construction for an added fireplace, over a separate footing that is not tied to the foundation of the house. After a while, due to changes in the soil, the foundation for the chimney may begin to settle and the chimney will begin to tilt apart from the house.

When faced with this problem, many homeowners consider removing the entire chimney and fireplace. That is not the best course of action when the problem can be permanently and effectively fixed for a fraction of the cost and much less disruption.

Frontier Basement Systems offers foundation underpinning services, and in these cases, steel piers can be driven into the ground until they reach a layer of soil that is compact enough to support the chimney structure. Steel braces are then tied to the piers and used to lift the chimney back into its original position. Because the entire structure is now supported by rock solid soil, homeowners will never have to worry about the tilting chimney problem again.
