Flooding in Middle Tennessee

This past weekend was full of heavy rains.

We have Hurricane Harvey to thank for the rains that caused a great deal of flooding in the Middle Tennessee area.

Around town there were flooded crawl spaces and basements, foundation shifts, concrete washing out, basement wall cave-ins.

Regardless of how well you have prepared for rain this was such a massive amount of rain the streams and rivers could not keep up, then to add all the drainage systems dumping into them not much could be done. Water is moving fast above and below ground.

The soil was so saturated it could not absorb any more water. The earth was overwhelmed. Tree roots weren’t secure.  The pressure of the water and earth on foundations was far too much for multiple buildings in the area.

By Monday, the weather was beautiful perfect for outdoor family fun ad cook outs instead most of the area was cleaning up flood debris.

1 inch or rain on 1 acre is equivalent to 27,000 gallons of water.

Not just the acre you sit on but every acre uphill from you.

Gutters and waterproofing systems are only designed to handle so much water at any given time. The whole idea of water management is to get water out faster than it comes in, when that doesn’t happen flooding occurs.  

Many homeowners are still working on repairs to their homes and will be for some time while others were lucky.  There is a chance we will catch some rain from the tail of Hurricane Irma as she dies down.  Check your home, make sure your valuables are secure, and get an inspection if you have any questions.
