Rain, Rain, Go Away

There is definitely one thing to say about Middle Tennessee and Southwest Kentucky weather and that is, " If you don't like the weather today, just wait until tomorrow". I wanted to write a post a few days ago about the dry weather and how that can affect the soil, in turn affecting the foundation of your home.

Briefly, when the weather is very dry and hot, like in the drought we recently experienced, the hard soil can cause your foundation to crack...even small cracks can turn into BIG problems... It is smart to always to a walk around your home and do a self-inspection of your foundation when the weather is dry to see if there are any problem areas.

Now, dry soil is not really our problem anymore...Scattered thunderstorms in the area have brought some heavy rains on and off. Heavy rains can lead to moisture, damp areas, and sometimes flooding in your basements and crawlspaces. One might think that a little moisture and water collecting in the lower parts of your home might not be such a big deal, "It will resolve itself and dry up once the rain stops" one might think... Its unfortunate, but any excessive moisture in a space like a basement or crawlspace is a breeding ground for mold..."a little mold in the basement, what's the big deal?". Some of the air that you and your family breath comes from beneath your home...unclean, unhealthy, moldy air could be entering the living area of your home... Ensuring that there is healthy air for the people in your home to breathe starts below your floor.

Take proper precautions when the weather changes, as it is a driving force behind the health of your home.
